All businesses
that survive start-up to the operational phase grow in that their
sales increase, their systems expand, and their revenues climb.
But this organic growth is an evolutionary process that has limits.
True growth,
or high growth as it is often called, is something else again; it
is a revolutionary process that involves rapid expansion, and sometimes,
a dramatic change in direction. Unlike evolutionary growth, which
is a steady increase in business, revolutionary growth involves
some environmental factor or event that launches a business on a
completely different path, that changes the business forever. Events
that might initiate this process include:
-
Industry consolidation
- Increased
competition
- New market
opportunities or threats
- Economic
and social changes
