Northwestern Polytechnic (formerly Grande Prairie Regional College) reflects the entrepreneurial energy of the region. Established as a college more than five decades ago, the institution received its polytechnic designation in 2021.

With campuses in Grande Prairie and Fairview, Northwestern Polytechnic serves students from across Alberta, Canada, and the world. Students pursue a wide variety of academic programs ranging from certificates and diplomas to degrees offered via the institution’s schools of business, skilled trades, health and education, and applied science and technology.

Northwestern Polytechnic’s ever-growing degree programs are currently offered in collaboration with other institutions. Students may complete degrees in nursing or education through the University of Alberta. Dual credit programming gives high school students the opportunity to complete college credits as early as Grade 11.

Renowned for its architecture and location adjacent to the expansive 13.7 km Muskoseepi Park trail network, the Grande Prairie campus provides a supportive environment for innovation, wellness, and success. The campus is home to a library with access to over 76,000 print items and more than five million items through consortia membership, a 500-seat concert hall, and athletic facilities serving competitive teams in basketball, cross-country, indoor track, soccer, and volleyball.

Located in the heart of Alberta's Peace Country, Northwestern Polytechnic's Fairview Campus is a vibrant hub for state-of-the-art career programs and specialty training. An on-campus fitness centre provides a fully equipped weight room, cardio room with exercise equipment, and racquetball/squash courts, plus a full-size indoor pool with waterslide and hot tub. Other on-campus amenities include a cafeteria, bookstore, computer labs, theatre, residence, bank machines, and a working farm.

Standard Admission Requirements

1. Certificate and Diploma - Minimum 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent OR mature student status with testing required. Specific prerequisites are outlined in the program listings.

2. University Transfer - Admission requirements for university transfer programs include English 30-1 and four grade 12 subjects, as specified by the chosen program. Normally the program will require a minimum overall average of 60 per cent. If applicants have a mark less than 50 per cent on a high school course, that course will not be considered for admission.

3. Degree - Having the minimum admission requirements for entry into GPRC university transfer programs is no guarantee that applicants will be accepted at their chosen university or into a degree program offered on site. Admission to the universities may vary from program to program and university to university. Quota programs at the universities tend to have higher academic requirements for admission. Universities have various admission requirements for high school graduates and for non-matriculated adult students. Carefully examine the admission requirements for the university and the program of choice.

4. Mature Student Status - Admission requirements for adult students, 21 years of age or older on the first day of classes, to university transfer programs include English 30-1 and one or two additional 30-level subjects, depending on the program to which applicants are seeking admission. A minimum grade of 50 percent is required in each course and applicants must have a minimum overall average of 60 percent. Placement assessments and a recommendation from an advisor in Student Services may be required. Contact the Admissions Office for more information.

5. Out-of-Province Student Admission - Admission requirements for out-of-province students include completion of high school and presentation of the equivalents of the Alberta Education high school subjects required for admission to the chosen program.
