Keeping Your Loans in Interest-free Status

Alberta Student Loans

Your Alberta Student Loans are in interest-free status  while you are in school full time. This means that while you are a full-time student, you are not required to:

• make payments on your loans
• pay interest on your loans

Interest-free status may not be automatic for previous Alberta Student Loans.  You must tell EDULINX and/or your lending institution you are in school.

• Interest-free status for a person on parental leave If you take a break from full-time studies for parental leave, you may apply for interest-free status on your Alberta Student Loans.
• Interest-free status for medical residents You are no longer required to pay interest or make payments on your Alberta Student Loans while you are completing medical residency training.
• Interest-free status for Canadian Forces Reservists If you are a Canadian Forces Reservist who has interrupted full-time studies to serve on designated operations, you may no longer be required to pay interest or make payments on your Canada and Alberta Student Loans if you meet the eligibility criteria. If you are approved for interest-free status on your Canada Student Loans then you will automatically receive the same approval on your Alberta Student Loans.
